Years ago a leading Christian spokesman was asked to sum up in one word the meaning of Christianity. He answered‚ "Relationships." This generation of families and individuals‚ as a whole‚ are more relational than previous generations. Gaining the trust of non-Christians and the unchurched through personal relationships is a vital part of seeing people come to know Jesus Christ in this day and age. An effective method that can be used to reach this contemporary generation is Home Fellowship Studies or whatever your church desires to call them.
A part of many thriving churches throughout North America today are Home Bible Study Fellowships. The following are some goals for Home Fellowship Bible Study Groups:
- Personal spiritual growth for each Christian: Topical‚ relevant‚ interactive Bible studies.
- Worship: Singing‚ playing music‚ etc.‚ where the focus is God.
- Fellowship between group members: Sharing and praying for one another.
- Intimacy and trust: Providing a safe place for members to be open and vulnerable.
- Evangelism: Inviting friends‚ neighbors‚ etc.‚ to attend the Home Group‚ church‚ evangelistic events‚ etc.‚ as well as learning how to effectively share the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
- Outreach: Opportunities for service in the neighborhood and city‚ nationally and internationally. Example: Home Groups taking food and Bibles to homeless and/or going on a short-term mission trip together.
- Social activities: Having frequent fun activities to build intimacy‚ such as barbecues‚ bowling‚ picnics‚ movies‚ swimming‚ etc.
